First-time buyer of Blackrock bulls Nick Bagshaw liked what he saw so much that he paid the top-prices last week when Blackrock Angus held their annual bull sale at Boyanup.

The Boyup Brook cattleman will eventually see his Blackrock bulls' progeny grow right through an on-farm 70-100-day feedlot program.

But first the bulls will attend to covering some top Angus cows to breed replacement heifers into a 600-cow herd.

"We use a Charolais bull over the Angus cows for our commercial production," Mr Bagshaw said.

He bought Blackrock D67 for the $7000 topper, followed by a $6500 purchase, the equal second top-price.

Both bulls were sired by Ardrossan Direction W109, a sire that is used in 171 herds throughout Australia.

The popular sire's sons were well sold at the sale and Greg Angilley, of Western Stud Farms, Pinjarra, paid $6000 for a W109 son.

Another son of the sire was sold to S & R Digiorgio & Sons, of South Australia, for $5500.

Bidding on behalf of Jasper Hill Resources, Elders agent Alec Williams secured a $6500 bull and one for $6250, the former being the first of four Ben Nevis Zexar Z86 sons on offer at Blackrock.

Mal Barrett, of Elders, was successful for his clients, Peter and Judy Middleton, of Donnybrook, with bids of $6500 for Blackrock D91 and $4500 for D78, the former sired by Lawsons Dinky-Di Z191.

Esperance producers were well represented at the sale - GA & JA Davidson paid $6250 for a high EBV-indexing son of BT Right Time and Brian and Karen Gravestocks bought four bulls for an average price of $4938.

"Blackrock bulls are consistently structurally sound," Mr Gravestocks said.

Landmark agent Peter Gale successfully bid on behalf of volume buyer Chilwell, of Esperance, who bought five bulls for an average price of $3050.

Elders conducted the sale.
