Displaced airline pilots to drive headers for WA farmers at harvest

Former airline pilots could be cruising WA paddocks rather than international skies this summer, helping bridge the massive shortfall of skilled machinery operators for the upcoming $6 billion grain harvest. WA pilots Dean McKie, Stuart Ralls, and Steve Barnden, who had been flying A350 planes for a major Asian airline operating from Perth, were stood down after COVID-19 forced the collapse of international travel. The three completed a four-day entry level harvest skills program this week at York through 2 Work in Oz. They are now in discussions about farm jobs where they will drive headers. Pilots from other major airlines, including Qantas and Air Mauritius, will participate in the same course next week, as part of 36 scholarships in harvest skills, subsidised by the Grain Industry Association of WA. Grain farmers usually source skilled European farm workers to help harvest their average 15 million tonne crops. COVID-19 travel restrictions meant this was no longer possible and the industry estimated it could be many hundreds of workers short this year. Pilot Dean McKie said he was looking forward to working on a farm. “As pilots we are used to working long hours, monitoring systems for up to 12 hours at a time, at all hours of night. I don’t expect any problems transitioning,” he said. Stuart Scott, chief executive of Studium, a website that aims to connect displaced workers with farming jobs under a State Government Ag program, said about 40 pilots had registered for header driver roles. “However, it is unlikely all of these will end up working on farms,” he said. “The work is obviously regional based, which does not suit everyone. Some pilots were required to do occasional shifts for the airlines which meant they couldn’t commit for the full harvest. “With harvest gearing up in mid to late October, it’s also early days for these pilots to be committing to roles.” The State Government this week launched its Work and Wander out Yonder campaign, encouraging young West Australians to take a working holiday in the regions. The campaign is targeted at the unemployed, university students and school leavers to fill job vacancies in the horticulture and regional tourism industries. About 8000 workers are needed for harvest, including across the horticulture industry. Vegetables WA chief executive John Shannon said crunch time for the horticulture industry would come in October when spring harvest needs ramp up. WA today declined to adopt a National Agriculture Workers Code that would enable greater movement of agriculture workers between some states, as the State Government maintains its hard border stance.
