Sponghaul Transport owners Clint and Emma Spong enter ‘not guilty’ pleas to cattle rustling allegations

The owners of a Moora-based livestock transport company have pleaded not guilty to offences linked to WA’s biggest alleged cattle rustling heist. Sponghaul Transport co-owner Clinton Spong entered the not guilty plea in the Moora Magistrates Court on Wednesday after being charged with three counts of property laundering and engaging in an offence, one of receiving and one of attempting to pervert justice. His wife and business partner Emma Spong entered a not guilty please to being an accessory to an indictable offence. The couple founded Sponghaul Transport in 2009, specialising in grain and livestock transport. Their work includes transporting cattle for pastoralists in the Pilbara. Mr and Mrs Spong are due to appear in the District Court on November 5 for a trial listing hearing. The Spongs are among eight people charged with a total of more than 70 offences linked to the alleged cattle rustling by the rural crime squad. The squad had been investigating the alleged theft of 803 cattle worth $800,000 as part of its Operation Topography investigation. Police claim there are cattle rustling syndicates made of industry insiders, including musterers, livestock truck drivers, stock agents and feedlot staff. Others charged include Edmund station owners Richard Arends and his partner Rachael Third, who face the lion’s share of offences. Mr Arends has been charged with 24 offences, ranging from alleged stealing and property laundering to permitting an unlicensed person to possess a firearm/ammunition and attempting to pervert the course of justice. Mr Arends appeared before the Carnarvon Magistrates Court on Monday but has not entered a plea. Ms Third faces 18 charges — from stealing to property laundering and attempting to pervert the course of justice. She is due to next appear before the Carnarvon court on October 18 and is also yet to enter a plea. The most recent to be charged is a Pilbara-based breeder of rodeo horses Brock Harris, who is facing five charges of stealing. He has not yet been required to enter a plea. Nutrien livestock agent Daniel Wood and stock buyer and station operator Joshua Abbott have both pleaded not guilty while station worker Steven McDowall also faces charges. Another man, from Moora, has received a spent conviction over one charge of receiving stolen goods. Police have collected evidence including extensive phone intercepts, financial statements, and cattle transport records, a source close to the investigation has revealed.
