Civmec lands more work on BHP’s major debottlenecking project at Port Hedland in $400m contract suite

Civmec shares spiked on Monday after booking more work on a major port debottlenecking project with BHP. The Henderson headquartered contractor disclosed the new contract win, alongside a charging facilities gig with Fortescue, would be worth about $400 million over the current financial year and into 2027. BHP is embarking on construction of the Port Debottlenecking Project 2 (PDP2) at its Nelson Point operations ready to handle first ore in the final quarter of 2028. A big portion of the operation will be installing a sixth car dumper and supporting kit to keep the miner on track for its 305mtpa sustained production target during planned port upgrades in 2029. Civmec will oversee concrete and earthworks for the installation of the additional car dumper, as well as general concrete works across the site for new conveyors and transfer stations. The contractor is also handling manufacture of the sixth dumper at its Henderson fabrication facility. It follows a substantial steel fabrication package, consisting of about 700 tonnes of structural steel modules, as part of the same package for BHP’s broader project. It’s expected the new kit will be able to tip two 135 tonne rail cars at a time, allowing for up to 16,000 tonnes of iron ore to be unloaded every hour. Civmec chief Patrick Tallon said the group was delighted to be entrusted with the work. “We are honoured to be trusted to deliver, particularly given the location and complexity of the scope, which plays to Civmec’s strengths” The contractor has also been engaged by Fortescue to building charging facilities capable of powering light mobile and support mobile equipment and pit power infrastructure at Fortescue’s Eliwana and Flying Fish mine sites. Civmec shares closed the day up at $1.59.
