Tributes for worker killed at Saracen Mineral Holdings’ Carosue Dam gold mine in northern Goldfields

A WA mine worker who plunged more than 20m to his death on Monday has been remembered by colleagues as the “nicest bloke” in the industry. Saracen Mineral Holdings today confirmed the death of a worker at its Dervish goldmine, 120km north-east of Kalgoorlie, revealing he was an underground contractor. The West Australian understands efforts were being made today to safely retrieve the body of the man, killed when his loader veered off the edge of a stope. It is believed the loader fell 25m and the worker was later found unresponsive at the mine, which is part of Saracen’s Carosue Dam operations. The deceased man’s identity has not be released publicly but co-workers today posted tributes on social media, with one describing him as “the nicest bloke” in mining. Another posted: “Was a pleasure working with you my brother. 19 months together and you taught me so much. Will forever respect you, rest peacefully my man.” Others offered their condolences to the man’s “lovely wife, beautiful boys and extended family”. “RIP mate, one of the best blokes I’ve ever worked with. Thoughts are with the family,” another post read. Saracen managing director Raleigh Finlayson also expressed the company’s deepest sympathy to the worker’s family, friends and colleagues. “This is an extremely tragic accident and all our thoughts are with his family at this very difficult time,” he said. “The health and safety of our people is always our first priority. Saracen is currently working closely with the WA Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety on the continuing investigation, while working with our contract partners to ensure full support is provided to the family and all Saracen employees and contractors.” Operations at Carosue Dam remain suspended. Saracen said it would update the market today on the resumption of operations and request for a trading halt on its shares to be lifted. The department confirmed yesterday its inspectors remained at Carosue Dam and were “working with the mine operator to assess the situation”. “The department’s officers are working with the mine operator to identify and assess the circumstances surrounding the fatality,” DMIRS acting director of mine safety Graham James said. “Further investigations into the incident are continuing.” Several sources confirmed to The West Australian that a team was working to safely retrieve the man’s body. The last mine site fatality in WA was on June 20 last year when 44-year-old haul truck driver Andrew Herd was killed at the Red Hill granite quarry near Perth, when his truck fell from the haul road into the pit. Monday’s death comes after a separate safety incident at Carosue Dam on Friday. A Royal Flying Doctor Service spokeswoman said it responded to a patient at a mine site in the region on Friday morning. “A crew from the RFDS Kalgoorlie base were tasked to retrieve the patient who was subsequently transferred to a hospital in Perth,” she said. The department confirmed the worker in the Friday incident had a lacerated arm.
