Yara Pilbara Fertilisers has struck a multi-year gas supply deal with ExxonMobil Australia for its ammonia plant near Karratha. The ExxonMobil gas comes from the US company’s 25 per cent stake in Chevron’s Gorgon LNG project on Barrow Island. The agreement with ExxonMobil follows the renewal of an existing supply deal with Santos announced last month. The Norwegian chemicals company uses gas as a feedstock at its plant on the Burrup Peninsula to produce ammonia, which is subsequently processed into a fertiliser. Yara’s ammonia is distributed to the Australian domestic market as well as export markets in Korea, Indonesia and other South East Asian markets. The company is investigating how it can produce renewable hydrogen to create green ammonia as part of a broader plan to be carbon neutral by 2050.
