Tech, retail and property stocks were among the standout performers across the sectors.

Energy firms like Woodside were surprisingly quiet on Friday, despite a 4 per cent lift in oil prices amid sky-high tensions in the Middle East.

Gold miners, which have fallen in recent weeks due to sluggish commodity prices, mostly rose today.

Capricorn Metals also paid investors just its second ever dividend.

Mexican fast food chain Guzman fell, despite flagging a strong lift in sales across its network of restaurants over the past three months.

Among the retailers, Premier Investments, which owns sleepwear chain Peter Alexander, rose strongly.

Looking forward, the Reserve Bank now has just two interest rate decisions left this year, which is why investors will be bracing for next Thursday’s latest jobs data.

The Australian dollar has strengthened, buying roughly 69.8 US cents.
