Industry says local processing means WA timber industry will remain strong in face of China log ban

WA’s timber industry will feel little impact from China’s ban on Australian logs, according to the local industry. The Forest Industries Federation of WA’s executive director Melissa Haslam said producers had established a local processing sector, and the export market of logs to China was minimal. “This is a marginal market for WA, with up to about 50,000 tonnes of logs available for export to China annually,” Ms Haslam said. “WA timber businesses involved in this export market were already prepared for the announcement, so the impact has been minimal and well-managed.” As previously reported in The West Australian, Bunbury-based exporter Varied was preparing a consignment for export but put that on hold after China first mooted a ban on Australian timber — among a suite of other products — in November. Varied, which is Chinese-owned, is now seeking alternative markets. Ms Haslam said WA had a strong local manufacturing sector and could process the majority of its logs domestically. “At the moment we are experiencing great demand for timber locally, particularly in construction as people recognise the many benefits that come with building with timber,” she said. “So, while this was not a critical market in WA as far as log exports go, it does serve as a timely reminder of how important it is to support our local timber industry so we can continue to sustain our own needs.” Chinese customs authorities told the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment on December 23 it would suspend importing logs from WA and NSW due to pest concerns as the trade war between Australia and China intensifies. Log exports to China from Victoria, Queensland, Tasmania and South Australia were suspended last month. FIFWA has been liaising with the Australian Forest Products Association as it worked with industry and the department on phytosanitary processes to address the Chinese Government’s concerns. Exports of woodchips to China have not been affected.
