Angus centenary celebrated by cattle producers
A distinguished Australian live-stock breeding society has celebrated its centenary.
A Black Friday Angus event was held on Friday, September 13, to acknowledge 100 years since Angus Australia was founded in 1919, bringing together a big crowd for a centenarian luncheon at the Gingin Recreation Centre.
WA Angus committee chairman Mark Hattingh welcomed the 120 guests, including Angus Australia chief executive Peter Parnell and the society’s president Brad Gilmore.
During the celebrations, a special magazine was unveiled to highlight the history of the Angus breed in WA.
The special 36-page publication was collated by WA Angus news co-ordinator Shezanne Gibbs-Hooper.
WA Angus committee member John Young, of Narrogin, recited the State’s Angus history and outlined “how far we have come” to the crowd before Mr Parnell gave his outlook for the next 100 years.
“Angus Australia couldn’t be in a better position, with a great team of people around my office,” Mr Parnell said.
“I applaud the WA pioneering spirit of willingness to take on innovation, particularly the State’s adoption of Angus Breedplan, which was developed in the 1980s.
“In the distant future, I can envision beef becoming a luxury product, only affordable by the wealthy, so Angus quality must be emphasised as we strive to maintain our lead in the industry.”
Mr Parnell added the Angus breed, through its genetic progress, had contributed over $2.5 billion of added value to the beef industry.
