Ridin’, ropin’ and buckin’ — it’s rodeo season
There were plenty of thrills and spills when more than 1000 people turned out for the final Kununurra Bushman’s Association Rodeo of the year.
Kicking off with rodeo and campdrafting school during the week, events continued when competitions began on Friday and were highlighted by Saturday night’s rodeo.
Kununurra Bushman’s Association secretary Sophie Cannon said the event had built on previous years and was a good way to end Kununurra’s 2013 rodeo calendar.
“It went really well, probably one of the best ones we’ve had,” she said.
“We had almost 1000 runs for our campdraft which is really great and there was also a big crowd there on Saturday night for the rodeo.”
The cattle and horses supplied for the campdraft and rodeo came from a number of stations in the East Kimberley and surrounding region.
These included Legune, Rosewood, Ruby Plains and Sophie Downs Stations.
Ms Cannon said plans were in the pipeline to make some changes to the grounds and the arena.
“We’ve got approval to make some changes and we will hopefully be making a new arena,” she said.
“The committee is trying to get something new in after every rodeo and we’ve just had toilet blocks and a shower block.”
The next Kununurra Rodeo is during the Ord Valley Muster in May 2014, while keen punters can still attend other rodeos in surrounding areas including one in Derby later this year.
