The shortage of heavy lambs continues as the oversupply of less than 38kg types remains abundant. As a result there is a continued trend of strong prices for heavy lambs and almost no demand for lighter ones. Markets are trading roughly $1.40/kg for a 38kg or heavier lamb and $1.05/kg for anything 30 to 38kg. Mutton markets in WA remain miserable — processors are focussed on lamb and so space and demand is hard to find. However, traders are starting to show interest in mutton with wool types to go out on stubble. On the east coast, prices appear to be showing a bit of strength. It’s expected there will be some forward contracts out for December and January in the coming week or so and that will give a good indication on the market outlook. As it stands today though, store lambs are bid around $1.60/kg liveweight and mutton is as unwanted throughout the country.
