Beyond the Saleyards: Markets lift but gaps are evident

And all of a sudden there were stuff-all sheep around . . . WA sheep and lamb markets have lifted this week as both east and west coast processors are starting to see gaps in their kill space open up. Feedlots are also starting to lift their prices but are limited by the forwards they are getting from processors. On the east coast, markets are also firmer with spot bids increasing by $0.10-$0.20 this week. Both feedlots and processors continue to chase stock out of WA. WA cattle markets have also continued to show strength. There are still enough supplies around to keep processors moving, but I suspect the buyers have more outbound calls on their logs than inbound. Live export markets have seen a flurry of activity for July with multiple orders for steers and bulls in the $2.50-$2.60/kg live weight region.
