Beyond the Saleyards: New-season lambs not yet ready

The WA processor market has been relatively flat, but space is now readily available for mutton and old-season lambs as supplies remain tight. New-season lambs are generally not ready yet. On the store market side of things, there are numerous buyers chasing lambs in weights from 22kg up, and delivery from now through to November. Store buyers are well aware of the value of securing stock early, but are waiting for producers to create listings on our marketplace so they can bid on them. On the east coast, New South Wales and South Australian prices have been stable, but Victoria has increased by 20¢/kg hot standard carcase weight this week. Supplies for trade weight lambs are tight there, too. Store lamb markets are incredibly strong, with some producers offering 35kg store lambs at $4.20/kg liveweight. Goat markets have eased slightly over the past week, with liveweight prices 10¢ lower to $1.30. This is likely because of a few plants closing down for maintenance, as they will not want to be held owning stock for an extended period. Live export markets have shown some activity, with Brahman cattle out of Queensland bid from $2.70-$3 depending on weights. Local markets also remain strong, but with weaning starting in some areas and a warm week ahead, we could see a few more cows on the market.
