Greedy gulls stage great grain robbery

When news broke that grain thieves were operating at CBH’s Albany Grain Terminal, the grain handler was on to it like a seagull on a hot chip, which was ironic because said thieves happened to be seagulls.

The infamously bolshie birds had been pilfering grain from farmers delivering to the terminal.

So CBH issued a warning to grain farmers recently, asking them to keep their grain truck trailers covered for “as long as possible” when visiting the port.

“Due to seagulls getting into the back of trailers now, drivers are requested to keep their tarps on for as long as possible prior to spearing,” CBH told farmers.

“And to roll tarps back once spearing has been completed.”

With tarps on the trailers, it would mean a sneaky seagull’s only chance to steal grain would be while it is being sampled (quality tested) with a large spear.

Any seagull that can dive into the back of a truck — and avoid being skewered by a large, stainless steel spear — almost deserves a little nibble.
