Resilient input supply chains and secure market access headline GrainGrowers’ Federal election wishlist

GrainGrowers Limited has released its Federal election wish list, calling on candidates to recognise the $20 billion the nation’s recent record grain harvest pumped into the economy. Resilient input supply chains and secure and sustained market access were at the top of the list, followed by stable business environments, reliable freight and logistic systems, a responsive biosecurity system and climate adaption tools. The aspirations were contained in a 20-page report titled Planting Seeds: Growing the Economy, which was released on Tuesday. GrainGrowers called on existing and would-be politicians to show support for farmers and rural communities as grain growers “continue to innovate and deliver a world-class product”. GrainGrowers chair Brett Hosking said the priority list had been generated with input from more than 600 farmers — via a survey — and had been moulded by GrainGrowers’ national policy group. He said the priorities would benefit the economy, communities, and consumers, and sustain industry growth. “Last year, growers across the country went to work and produced more than 60 million tonnes of grain,” he said. “In order to continue to successfully grow our industry, we are looking to leaders who will share in our vision for growth. “The contributions growers make is immense, as local employers, stewards of our land, and ensuring the supply of fresh and nutritious food is something Aussies don’t have to worry about.” Mr Hosking said regional Australia needed to be “strong and resilient”, with access to telecommunications on par with those in metropolitan areas. “We want thriving and competitive grain enterprises, with our growers able to access supply and pricing data that lets them make critical business decisions,” he said. “Australian growers need investment in research and development, so they have the tools available to manage climate variability on their farms and play their part in reducing emissions. “I encourage all candidates in this election to show their commitment and work with us to support growers across the country.” Moora farmer Tracy Lefroy — who is on GrainGrowers’ national policy group — was quoted as a case study in the report, calling for investment and help to ensure farmers were “not flying blind”. “Overcoming challenges is the bread and butter of being a farmer,” she said. “We are nimble in our response to seasonal conditions, we’re the masters of innovation, and understand our actions determine the success of our stewardship. “Climate change is a challenge like no other – small steps such as our on-farm solar-powered desalination plant, confined feeding of livestock to reduce environmental impact while freeing up cropping land and seeking out technology that allows for more prudent use of herbicides and fertilisers, are all within our current scope. “We need better ways to quantify the impact of our farming practices, new technology which can deliver greater sustainability and productivity… and better ways to share this with our customers.” The Federal election will be held on May 21.
