Association for the Advancement of Animals Breeding and Genetics Conference: 25th Anniversary focus on youth

The 25th anniversary of the Association for the Advancement of Animal Breeding and Genetics Conference brought more than 225 livestock scientists, breeders, educators, students and industry service providers together to share in discussions on the theme “Animal breeding is at the crossroads”. The biennial conference, held last Wednesday to Friday (July 26 to 28) returned to the University of Western Australia from it’s previous appearance in 2011 when it was held at the University Club. AAABG committee president Bronwyn Clarke said the aim of the organisation since its inception in 1979 was to bring everyone with an interest in the advancement of genetics in livestock breeding together. “Our program is packed and we have delegates and keynote speakers from all around the world,” she said. On day two — producer day — that was organised by the WA Livestock Research Council, Dr Clarke asked students to raise their hands. “OK everyone else in the room look around — please make an effort to go and talk to these people and ask them about their studies — they are the next generation of producers, scientists, farm consultants and extension specialists,” she said. “WALRC is committed to supporting young people in our industry and they have come here today as part of that journey — please make it worth their while.” The producer day also included the conference dinner evening at the university’s Banquet Hall where Dr Clarke discussed WALRC’s Farm-a-Friend initiative. “It’s about when farm meets science with a whole new understanding,” she said. Overall, the conference was a huge success with many people commenting on the excellent proceedings and take-home messages.
