Meat and Livestock Australia’s new National Young Cattle Indicator to offer ‘complete view’ of market

Meat and Livestock Australia has launched a new cattle market indicator it says will offer the most accurate national analysis tool of the restocker market. The National Young Cattle Indicator, or NYCI, covers multiple sales channels across the country to offer a “complete view” of the national restocker market. MLA market information manager Stephen Bignell said it would provide a user-friendly interface for producers and capture young cattle sales across channels under certain specifications. The indicator covers yearling, vealer and weaner cattle over 200kg liveweight which are bought and sold as restockers, meaning they will return to a farm to replace livestock, be grown out or join the breeding herd. It covers cattle sold anywhere in Australia, unlike the Eastern Young Cattle Indicator and Western Young Cattle Indicator. “MLA collects a large amount of market information and is continually looking for ways to share this information with the industry in practical and useful formats,” Mr Bignell said. “The NYCI will be an extension of this, combining and expanding two information sources, the EYCI and the WYCI, on a national scale.” The NYCI follows the same structure as other MLA indicators, presenting prices on a seven-day rolling average expressed in cents per kilogram liveweight (¢/kg lwt) and rounded to two decimal points. Mr Bignell said industry often used the “reactive” EYCI as a “catch all” for the market and producer confidence, despite the indicator shifting in recent years. “The opportunity in developing the NYCI is that MLA will have an indicator fit for use for each of the main buyers, processors, feedlots and producers,” he said. “As processor demands have shifted to larger carcase weights, today most EYCI cattle are purchased by restockers or feeders. “It was identified that industry was in need of a more accurate national restocker indicator.” MLA analyst Erin Lukey said the breakdown of the first week of sales showed 60 per cent of the 139,520 head of indicator throughout was from physical saleyards and 40 per cent from online sales. She said NSW and Queensland were the major players in the NYCI, comprising 33 per cent and 53 per cent of throughput respectively. “Victoria makes up 8 per cent of the indicator, SA 4 per cent and Tasmania and WA 1 per cent of throughput each,” Ms Lukey said. “Interestingly, NSW, Victoria and Tasmania all had larger State throughput through online sales, whereas in Queensland, SA and WA, physical saleyard throughput of young restocker cattle was larger.”
