Aussie Farms stripped of charity status by watchdog

The country’s peak charity watchdog has stripped a controversial animal rights group — which publishes farming businesses’ locations and contact details online — of its charity status.

The Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission revealed today it had revoked Aussie Farms’ charity status after an investigation.

Under the decision, Aussie Farms will no longer be entitled to Federal charity tax concessions, including income tax exemption, fringe benefits tax rebates and goods and services tax concessions.

“Charities must stick to their purpose, and maintain their obligations under the ACNC Act, Charities Act and adhere to governance standards,” ACNC commissioner Gary Johns said.

“By revoking the charity registration of Aussie Farms Inc, the organisation is no longer able to access Commonwealth charity tax concessions.

“Revocation of charity status is the most serious action the ACNC can take.”
