Denmark bakery wins top loaf

For the first time in seven years, Denmark Bakery has won the Perth Royal Show’s top bread prize — the Tony Noonan Champion Loaf.

The champion loaf was chosen from first prize winning loaves across 22 bread categories, and Denmark Bakery took out 16 categories to claim the coveted award.

Baker Clete O’Brien, who co-owns the bakery with Sean Cleary, was thrilled with the award, which he attributed to hard work and a passion for developing new products.

“Sean and I both started our baking apprenticeships in 1978, so we have 35 years of baking experience each,” he said.

“We are both passionate about learning from the baking industry and have travelled the world looking at ancient and contemporary methods and technologies.”

The bakery has been a dominant exhibitor at the Perth Royal Show in recent times, having also taken out the champion bread title last year.

“We also picked up the best gourmet loaf award for our mega multigrain fruit loaf, which is a loaf we have developed in-house,” he said.

“It is a half-sourdough half-traditional loaf that is heavily fruited, rolled in oats and it has an unbelievable taste.”

The new bread will be launched this weekend.

The 2013 Perth Royal Show opens this Saturday, September 28, and runs through until October 5.
