Broome truck rollover: Two cattle dead and about 30 on the run following Broome livestock truck rollover

Escaped cattle were on the run on Monday after a livestock truck rollover in Broome left two animals dead, with drivers being warned to exercise extreme caution for livestock in the area. The rollover occurred at about 6am on Gubinge Road between Cable Beach Road East and Jigal Drive ABC reported about 30 cattle were on the run after the front trailer rolled on its side. A WA Police spokeswoman confirmed that two cattle died at the scene, and that the driver and sole occupant was uninjured. Broome Private Taxis owner Paul Rewell said the road, the only road to the port, had been closed for over five hours following the crash. “It’s the only road to the port — it stopped everything from going in and getting to the port,” he said. “Nobody could get into the port at all.” A video taken by Mr Rewell showed a white mustering helicopter flying above the crash site. “The cattle are obviously right there, because just in behind there’s a gravel road,” Mr Rewell said. “They’ve taken a single axle trailer to muster them in and roll onto the road to get the loose cattle back onto a truck.. The accident is almost certain to delay cattle loading at the Broome Port, where the livestock carrier Gelbray Express - flying under the flag of Portugal - has been berthed since July 20. WA Police, Main Roads, Horizon Power, and the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development attended the scene. Gubinge Road between Cable Beach Road East and Jigal Drive has since been reopened, with Main Roads warning drivers to exercise extreme caution for livestock in the area.
