Craig McLachlan has sensationally dropped a defamation case against a former co-star and two media outlets.

The barrister for the media outlets, Michael Hodge QC, told Justice Carolyn Simpson he had “just been given notice” the case would be dropped.

“We've just been given notice that Mr McLachlan is applying for leave to discontinue the proceedings,” Mr Hodge said on Friday.

McLachlan was suing the ABC, Nine and actor Christie Whelan-Browne for defamation.

The 56-year-old claimed the media companies and Ms Whelan Browne defamed him by publishing stories in January 2018 which he says falsely portrayed him as having harassed and bullied female performers in the 2014 run of The Rocky Horror Show.

He denied the allegations.

The first of 11 women was due to give evidence against McLachlan on Friday.

Costs will now be determined against the Gold Logie winner.

More to come.
