Hollywood actress Diane Ladd has died, aged 89.

Ladd, who is the mother of actress Laura Dern, appeared in films including Wild At Heart and Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.

Dern confirmed the news to the Hollywood Reporter.

Ladd appeared in Martin Scorsese’s Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, for which she received one of her three Academy Award nominations.

She won a Golden Globe for her role in Alice.

In 1960 she married Bruce Dern, with whom she had Laura and another daughter, who drowned in a pool at 18 months old.

After finalising her divorce from Bruce in 1969, Ladd married William Shea Jr that same year, before splitting in 1977.

She went on to wed Robert Hunter in 1999, and remained married until his death earlier this year.

Her many credits included Chinatown, Primary Colors and Rambling Rose.
