After Billie Eilish became the first solo female artist to top the Triple J Hottest 100 with 2019 hit Bad Guy, could American superstar Cardi B make it back-to-back wins for the ladies with global smash WAP?

While the sexually explicit celebration of the female libido co-starring rapper Megan Thee Stallion is not among the favourites for the 27th annual listener poll broadcast on Saturday, WAP could cruise past a wide open field of evenly matched songs.

The current favourite to win the Hottest 100 is Heat Waves from English psych-pop outfit Glass Animals, followed by songs from Brisbane quintet Ball Park Music, Sydney producer Flume and Perth’s own Spacey Jane.

The Spacies’ album track Booster Seat is considered a dark horse, but the fact Triple J listeners voted their debut album Sunlight as their favourite of 2020 bodes well for the young band.

Polling aggregate web site 100 Warm Tunas has Glass Animals winning followed by Ball Park Music’s Cherub and Spacey Jane with WAP tipped to come in down at No. 16.

Describing itself as “the internet’s most accurate” predictor of the countdown, last year 100 Warm Tunas had Eilish coming second behind US rapper Denzel Curry’s cover of Rage Against the Machine’s Bulls On Parade.

Yesterday betting agency Sportsbet had WAP at 13-to-one — the same odds as Fremantle psych-rock stars Tame Impala’s Lost in Yesterday.

They had Glass Animals as outright favourites, with Spacey Jane nipping at their heels and Ball Park Music well back.

Another outside chance is Brisbane dance duo Mashd N Kutcher’s Get on the Beers, which samples Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews.

Triple J revealed late last week that there were only a few hundred votes separating first and second, making this year’s countdown the tightest since 2007 when Muse’s Knights of Cydonia edged out Silverchair’s Straight Lines by a mere 13 votes.

Voting closed on Monday at midday.

Last year, the poll garnered a record of more than 3.2 million votes.
