I’m ashamed to admit that I love a good old-fashioned celebrity scandal. My favourite are the ones that see A-list leading men getting caught cheating on their spouses — the grovelling statements they put out after the fact are *chef’s kiss*.
There have been doozies over the years: Maroon Five singer Adam Levine (who shared sexy DMs with a woman via TikTok) issued one that said, “I used poor judgment in speaking with anyone other than my wife in any flirtatious manner” — um, ya reckon?
Then there was Jude Law, whose rendezvous with the nanny saw him admitting he made a “bad error of judgment” (understatement, much?) in cheating on his fiance, Sienna Miller.
The ultimate cringe was The Wire’s Dominic West, who got busted in 2020 by paparazzi getting up close and personal with his co-star, Lily James, in Rome. After returning home to England, he posed for photographers outside his home, kissing his wife, before reading a statement that simply said, “Our marriage is strong and we are very much still together. Thank you,” before walking back inside.
ExCUSE me?
Interestingly, two of the players in two of these scandals — Sienna Miller and Dominic West — are front and centre in this fabulously watchable new series, playing a high-profile celebrity couple going through a high-stakes and very public divorce.
Meta much?
This drama is a strange hybrid of TV law procedural and scandalous soap. Which is to say: it’s deliciously watchable and you’ll be hooked.
This one’s for anyone who’s ever thumbed a copy of a tabloid rag at the dentist and loved every single salacious story: you’ll be obsessed.
Kill Jackie
Friday, streaming on Stan
Female rage is having something of a moment right now, with stacks of films and TV series exploring the concept, often with middle-aged women at the centre of the story (funny that).
This fantastic drama sees Catherine Zeta-Jones playing Jackie Price, a former international drug-dealer turned art dealer who’s being hunted down by an elite group of assassins. They have no idea what they are up against — hell hath no fury like a woman in her fifties with everything to lose.
Zeta-Jones is incandescent in this, and I can’t think of a better role to showcase her insane talents as an actor.
This is five-star excellent television.
East Of Eden
Thursday, streaming on Netflix
Florence Pugh, or “Miss Flo” as she’s known to her frenemies (if you know, you know) is back, in this big budget Netflix adaptation of John Steinbeck’s 1952 literary classic. No previews given — intrigued!
Class Clowns
Wednesday, 8.30pm, ABC
Julia Morris fronts this Task Master-esque series, which sees noted Aussie comedians, including Dave Hughes, Matt Okine and Luke McGregor, headed back to school to compete in tasks for house points. Silly-ish fun. I guess ...
A Taste For Murder
Wednesday, streaming on 7Plus
Cosy crime fans will want to check out this new series, which sees Warren Brown star as a grieving British detective who travels to the Italian island of Capri to reconnect with family, only to be drawn into a murder investigation. Worth a look.
