WA-made doco Return to the Lair of the Great White is making waves on Discovery’s Shark Week

Are Western Australian great white sharks born more aggressive than their relatives in the rest of the world? If you’ve been reading the news — especially recently — you’d be tempted to answer a resounding, ‘yes.’ With attacks on the rise and alarming footage shot by fishermen up and down the coast, you’d be forgiven for thinking our white shark population is cause for concern. But it’s a lot more complicated than that, says filmmaker and fisherman, Marc Payne. He’s the man behind WA’s SMART (Shark Management Alert in Real Time) drumline trial in 2019. He’s back exploring the fascinating subject in a new documentary, Return to the Lair of the Great White, airing as part of Discovery network’s globally popular Shark Week line-up. In the film, a follow-up of sorts to Lair of the Great White, sees Payne, a shark expert and abalone diver from Esperance, pair up with scientist Dr Craig O’Connell. Together with their team they head off to search the coast of south-western WA to discover if local lore really is correct: that sharks learn to hunt differently there, compared with populations in other parts of the world. After encountering juvenile great whites while shooting a previous doco, they want to see whether they can track down a rumoured ‘nursery’ ground, to observe shark pups up close to try to learn more about their behaviour. “When you look at great whites all around the world, for some reason what happens in WA appears to be a little bit different to what goes on in most of the locations around the world,” Payne told The West. “Nobody really knows the reason why. I have experienced it abalone diving for 30 years working down here — you could call it anecdotal evidence. Things you know are real and true, but there is no science behind that to back it up.” Teaming up with O’Connell, together they travel to a remote stretch of coast off the Great Australian Bight to try to discover more. It’s here they find a population of highly inquisitive, sub-adult great whites mixing with one another, using the network of underwater caves as the ultimate training ground. It’s enough to make any West Australian white with fear. Using state-of-the-art cameras and equipment — plus one very sturdy shark cage — the team captured some truly incredible footage, even getting in the water to dive with the wily beasts. So just how worried were they out there? “Oh, well, I guess I have spent a lot of time under water,” Payne says. “And I respect the sharks . . . We have a medic onboard and we have all the communications in play in case something happens. “But the main thing I rely on is that I have a really good team of people that I work with . . . they have got a lot of knowledge in the ocean. Being in the fishing, researching, and filming industry now for 30 years, I’ve got access to a lot of really good people.” Payne says Western Australia is leading the world in white shark research. And for many, it’s personal — Payne himself has lost friends to fatal attacks over the years. “I have been pretty close to five people (who have died),” he says. “So (I guess you could say I’m) right in among it all. “That gives me a drive and a passion to try and approach (the subject).” He wants people to see the bigger picture; to know that with understanding comes the knowledge of how to mitigate risk, and how to coexist with these powerful predators. “Our research teams would be the most experienced in the field worldwide,” he says. “We really need to use these guys and look at what they are doing and support them.” Return to Lair of the Great White airs on December 3 at 4.30pm on Discovery.
