Many of us took cleaning ways to extreme thanks to the year’s biggest party crasher, COVID-19 teaching us a thing or two about looking after our health and wellbeing.

With being homebound, it may have encouraged us to adopt compulsive cleaning habits like Monica Geller from Friends or learn how to bid farewell to things that no longer sparked joy like out of sight, out of mind declutter queen, Marie Kundo.

Take those learnings into the new year and end 2020 with a clean slate. With the festive season just around the corner, we look at the top five tips and tricks to get your home Christmas ready.

1. Get rid of mould and mildew with Vodka

Vodka is more than just a spirit used to help get the party started: it can be your secret weapon when it comes to bathroom cleaning.

Get rid of yucky mould and mildew spots by filling a spray bottle with a 50/50 mix of Vodka and distilled water and squirt on the affected areas. Let the Vodka do its bathroom magic for 10 minutes and wipe it away using a cloth or rag. If you want to make the process smell a whole lot nicer, add a small number of essential oil drops like lavender, rose or lemon to make the bathroom smell that extra fresh.

2. Clean your shower head with vinegar

Are you dealing with a Niagara Falls’ Maid of the Mist type spray instead of a steady water flow or has your in-house waterfall stopped due to an annoying clog? If your shower is not performing as well as one would hope to get comfortably clean, it may be time to clean the shower head to get rid of mineral build-up.

Let vinegar become your new cheap household cleaning staple and not just something drizzled on fish and chips. Just fill a sandwich bag with white vinegar and use a rubber band to attach it to your shower head and let it soak overnight. Rise and allow your shower head to shine by detaching the bag for a final wipe.

3. Love your pets even more by brushing them at least once every other day

Don’t let your home floor rival a hair salon when it comes to your four-legged friends shedding fur everywhere. Show your pets some extra love by brushing them at least once every other day to help stop the pile-up of hair being found everywhere.

When it comes to hoovering stubborn stray hairs, use a powerful cordless backpack vacuum to clean — a bonus for you and your pets to walk around without any tripping hazards.

Using professional-grade accessories like a seal-proof dust bag will also help to limit the allergens that your pets may bring into the home and help you achieve the ultimate deep clean in a safe manner.

4. Un-scratch your plates with baking soda

Wanted to use your finest plates for your Christmas feast but just noticed a horrid scratch mark from a rogue knife? Need not to despair; your fancy dishes can shine brighter than the star on your tree.

Give the plates a little polish with the use of baking soda and water to buff into the scratch marks, rise and voila; your plates are back to dazzle on the dinner table.

5. Clean your windows with old newspapers

Let yesterday’s news be today’s headline grab when it comes to cleaning. After finishing your daily read of The West Australian or Sunday Times, put the paper to good use again by using it to clean glass surfaces or windows for a streak-free clean.

Simply spray your glass cleaner onto the surface and wipe it with the newspaper. Easy.

Be the ultimate Cinderella (or Cinderman) and sweep 2020 under the rug.
