Cassandra Sainsbury says she’s engaged to be married

Convicted Australian drug smuggler Cassandra Sainsbury said she is engaged to be married to her partner in Colombia.

Ms Sainsbury gained international attention and became known as “Cocaine Cassie” after she was found guilty of trying to smuggle 5.8kg of the drug out of the South American nation in April 2017.

She spent three years of a six-year sentence behind bars in El Buen Pastor women’s prison before she walked free in April last year.

Ms Sainsbury, who is living in Colombia, on Thursday shared the news of her engagement on social media.

She wrote on Instagram: “So hard to choose a wedding dress. Yes people, I’m engaged”.

Earlier this month she shared a photo with her partner with the caption: “When you least expect it, good things do happen”.

Ms Sainsbury was 22-years-old when she was arrested with nearly six kilograms of cocaine stashed in headphone packages in her luggage at Bogota airport, before she was due to board a flight to Australia.

She was sentenced to six years in prison after a plea deal reduced what would have been a much longer jail term.

Ms Sainsbury was released on parole due to concerns of overcrowding in Colombian prisons during the coronavirus pandemic.

As part of her parole conditions, she is required to remain in Colombia for 27 months following her release.

Ms Sainsbury was reportedly engaged to a longtime partner at the time of her conviction.

Ms Sainsbury told Nine’s 60 Minutes after her release that she had met and become engaged to a female inmate in prison, but the pair later separated.

She is now engaged to a new partner whom she is believed to have met after she was freed.

Ms Sainsbury said earlier this year she was hoping to return to Australia “sooner rather than later”.
