Last night after a dinner in Northbridge the recommendation to get ice cream was posed, and while indulging in the cold treat on a freezing evening may seem like a ridiculous choice, it made our night.

Inside the very aesthetically pleasing Billy Van Creamy — a swirly mix of millennial pink walls with creaky floorboards and original roof detailing — the kids wolfed down their cones and the big kids did the same. My vegan chocolate, slathered with chocolate fudge sauce, was some of the best I’ve had in Perth.

Which had me thinking, why wait until summer to get our ice cream fix, when we can just rug up and do it in winter? To celebrate the treat year round, here are some of Perth’s yummiest ice cream spots.

In addition to the aforementioned vegan chocolate, the cabinet at this destination is filled with everything from classic vanilla to salted caramel (highly recommend adding brownie chunks).

Starting as an ice cream truck in 2014 in Northcote in Victoria, brothers Alex and Mitch Wells opened the bricks and mortar store on William Street in 2018. Here they hand-make their ice cream and sorbet in-store using organic dairy and wholefood ingredients.

Northbridge may be notorious for a pub crawl, but why not introduce an ice cream equivalent? Just down the road at the other end of William Street is another must-visit location, Chicho Gelato. Packed with a revolving collection of thoughtful and complex flavours — including grapefruit raspberry, bubble tea and rosewater white chocolate pistachio — the dream team also often have extra special and unexpected surprises on the menu — shout out to last November’s Aperol Spritz granita. Keep an eye on their Instagram so you don’t miss out.

A big bowl of pasta, red wine or oversized cone of creamy gelato is about as close to Italy as any of us will get this year, and you can enjoy the latter beachside in Scarborough this winter. Quickly becoming a favourite for locals, tourists and anyone who loves a super Instagrammable space, Dumbo Gelato have a mouth-watering menu that includes flavours such as lemon tea and blueberry with Persian fair floss, wattle-seed and macadamia, not to mention gelato pies that are now on our list to try this weekend.

Husband and wife team Kaitlyn and Mati have a knack for creating flavours that will appeal to the masses, no matter what you’re craving. Whether sea salt and caramel is your vibe, or perhaps couch potato (vanilla ice cream with chocolate cake caramel swirl and chocolate coated potato chips) or chocolate tahini, you’re always sure to be served with a killerwatt smile at their Highgate and Fremantle locations.

Okay, not necessarily in Perth, but with every second person flocking down to the South West now that the borders have reopened, it deserves a honourable mention. This nostalgic spot has every flavour under the sun, and if you have kids you’re also guaranteed quiet time as they run amok on the massive grassed area, playground, check out the animals or try their luck at mini-golf.
