How households can claim their $250 energy bonus
Households in Victoria will be eligible to receive a $250 bonus simply by logging onto the government’s Energy Compare website and seeking out a better deal.
The scheme will be available from Friday to all Victorian energy customers with a residential electricity or gas account.
Previously the deal was only available to those on government support.
Households who use the free website to compare their current energy deal with those on offer also stand to save hundreds more on their quarterly bills.
Data from the website shows seven out of every 10 users who log in stand to save money by switching their supplier – with typical savings of $330 a year.
Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said earlier this year that big power companies relied on people not having the time or knowledge to seek out a better provider for them.
“We know better deals are out there – and we’re helping Victorian families find them,” Mr Andrews said.
“This is a great opportunity for Victorians to save money, ease the cost of living, and cut their energy bills.”
Consumer group Finder estimates close to half of all Australians are paying a “lazy tax” on their power.
“(Many people) don’t think they are getting good value for money, but haven’t switched providers within the past six months,” senior editor at Finder Sarah Megginson said.
“When you’re ready to make the switch, contact your new provider – they will usually take care of the switch for you.”
Applications for the $250 bonus can be made through the website. Those without internet access can call the Victorian Energy Compare helpline or receive support from a community outreach partner.
The scheme will run until 30 June 2023.
