Toyota has lifted the covers off the updated Hilux, which will arrive in showrooms in late August with a boost in power and new looks.

Australia’s highest-selling vehicle retains the same 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel engine as before, but now offers 150kW and 500Nm — a jump of 20kW and 50-80Nm.

The bump in output has seen automatic 4x4s’ towing capabilities match the manuals at 3500kg.

In 4x2 models, all diesel autos are now rated at 2800kg, an increase of up to 300kg.

Despite the increased performance, Toyota says fuel economy has improved by up to 11.1 per cent.

The range will still also include 2.4-litre diesel and 2.7-litre petrol engine options.

Suspension upgrades include revised shock-absorber tuning, new bushings and an improved leaf-spring design to provide a more comfortable ride, particularly over rough roads without sacrificing off-road capability.

In 4x4 models with downhill-assist control, a new, additional traction control feature reroutes torque to assist grip in muddy or grassy conditions on worksites all while in 2WD.

Toyota has aimed to make the Hilux look tougher, with a large new trapezoidal grille and newly designed, smaller headlights combining for a meaner look.

Higher grades’ light clusters include LEDs.

There are also changes on the inside. All models now get an 8-inch display screen with enhanced voice recognition and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

A 4.2-inch multi-information display in the instrument binnacle incorporating a digital speed readout and other functions is new, while the SR and higher grades also score satellite navigation and digital radio.

There is no word on whether Toyota will change the Hilux’s six-month/10,000km service program to more generous 12-month/15,000km intevals like some of it rivals.

Pricing and full details will be revealed closer to the updated Hilux’s arrival.
