New all-terrain wheelchairs are set to make it easier for people with disability to enjoy the outdoors at Middleton Beach and the Walpole-Nornalup National Park.

The City of Albany and Walpole-Nornalup Visitor Centre were among 12 organisations to receive up to $10,000 each from the State Government to buy purpose-built wheelchairs designed to tackle sand, gravel and water.

An increase in demand has prompted the City to buy a second Beach Trekker All-Terrain Wheelchair for Middleton Beach.

Expected to be available in February, it features interchangeable floating and neutral wheels to be used on the sand or in the water.

The City is on the hunt for more funding to buy a hoist to help users into the wheelchair.

The Walpole-Nornalup Visitor Centre will use its wheelchair to allow residents and visitors to explore the region’s national park and the Valley of the Giants trail network.

City community relations manager Louise Paterson said the new chair was a welcome addition to the recently redeveloped Binalup/Middleton Beach foreshore which now has an accessibility ramp, beach matting and accessible toilets.

“We’re very thankful for the funding from the Department of Communities to purchase the chair,” Ms Paterson said.

“With more than 2000 residents who identify as needing daily assistance due to disability within our community, initiatives like this make a big difference.”

Disability Services Minister Don Punch said access to the outdoors and recreational activities were a key part of creating inclusive communities across WA.
