Bayonet Head man charged after police pursuit through Albany, allegedly driving recklessly on one tyre

A wanted Bayonet Head man who allegedly led police on a high-speed reckless pursuit throughout Albany’s suburbs on Friday has been hit with a host of charges after his arrest. The 40-year-old appeared in Perth Magistrates Court on Saturday, charged with failing to stop when directed by police, reckless driving to escape pursuit, no authority to drive, making a threat to unlawfully do an act, stealing a motor vehicle and aggravated armed robbery. Several of the charges stem from the June 20 incident, when Albany police officers, who were searching for him in relation to an ongoing investigation, attempted to stop his white Holden Commodore on Lower King Road about 2.15pm. The man allegedly drove off and led police on a 20-minute chase throughout Lower King, Spencer Park, the Albany CBD and Mira Mar. Police say he drove his car with three popped tyres recklessly and at high speeds before it experienced mechanical failure. The wagon came to a stop on Bathurst Street in Mira Mar, where it crashed into a kerb. Albany officer-in-charge Sen. Sgt. Carlos Correia congratulated the branches of police that were involved in the investigation and pursuit. “It was a team effort with our local traffic, police and detective teams being involved,” he said. “It was a great team effort to identify the accused and arrest him and ensure we were doing it together safely and not putting anyone else at harm. “The investigation is continuing.” The accused was remanded in custody after his bail was refused and will next appear in Albany Magistrates Court on July 3.
