A City of Albany project seeking to identify places to be dual named with traditional Noongar names is set for a boost after securing a Lotterywest grant of about $80,000.

In partnership with the Menang Noongar community and South Coast Natural Resource Management, the City will explore the traditional Noongar names for places across Albany.

The Restoring Menang Noongar Boodja Place Names project will be guided by local Aboriginal enterprise Kurrah Mia, which will start consultation with the Noongar community and research through historical records.

City of Albany Mayor Dennis Wellington said dual naming was a “fantastic initiative” for Albany.

“Having the traditional Noongar name side-by-side with the European place name sends a wonderful public statement of reconciliation as we continue to recognise the ongoing, strong and cultural connection Menang Noongar people have with Noongar country,” he said.
