Community arts is important, and even more so in regional towns as it is a chance to showcase the wealth of talented and creative people we have to tourists and the rest of the State.

That is why support from a governing body is so crucial to maintaining what we have in the Great Southern and to keep the creative juices flowing.

We need support to make sure our arts community stays strong given the tough time endured during 2020.

The Shire of Denmark has called on locals and visitors to support the Creative Community Summer @ the Artshouse program created by Denmark Arts as they begin to put the difficulties of 2020 behind them and make a fresh start to the new year.

With support from a State Government Creative Communities COVID-19 recovery grant to the tune of $30,000, secured by the Shire, the program began earlier this month and will continue until the end of January.

It includes a variety of free and paid arts programs for children, youth and adults who will be treated to music, art, writing, juggling, kids’ crafts and more.

The Creative Community Summer @ the Artshouse program is being offered for the first time and boasts an exciting line-up of local and visiting artists.

I think this a perfect opportunity for people who might wish to unlock an artistic trait to give it a try.

Given the Denmark population is probably one of the most arty and crafty in WA, this $30,000 boost is exactly what was needed.

Shire acting chief executive David Schober said the month-long program would have something for everyone.

“We were happy to be able to help Denmark Arts secure this recovery funding in the wake of all the setbacks the arts community has suffered in 2020,” he said.

“We are so proud of the vibrancy of our arts community here in Denmark, so we hope this Creative Community Summer @ the Artshouse program sets us up for a brilliant year of Denmark creativity in 2021.”

Currently in week three, the program has multiple events happening every day, from poetry and juggling to songwriting and movie screenings.

With just over a week left, why not get across to Denmark and make the most of what’s on offer?
