Denmark artist’s work to be featured in Bunbury exhibition exploring migrant experiences

A Denmark artist will join fellow creatives from the South West combining their talents in an exhibition as part of the inaugural Indian Ocean Craft Triennial.

Denmark artist Ruth Halbert will join forces with Katharina Meister from Cowaramup and Margaret River’s Elisa Markes-Young as they showcase artwork in an exhibition called Oblivion, on display in Bunbury next month.

Halbert is an interdisciplinary artist working with textile processes, installation, text and storytelling creating work in response to historical or political events that impact the world today.

She weaves and stitches to draw out the details of these stories, or as she puts it, “bringing what’s hidden into view to be confronted and to celebrate what is unique and what is universal”.

Oblivion will explore the migrant experience and fears of pending ecological and societal collapse.

It will also look at our complex digital lives.

There is a notable movement of artists towards craft and the hand-made as a response to these circumstances, using familiar tools, skills and mediums to communicate complex ideas.

Oblivion will be on display at Bunbury Regional Art Gallery from August 7 to November 7.
