The lids of rubbish and recycling bins in the Shire of Denmark will be replaced with new coloured lids in the coming months to meet the national standards.

The red recycling bin lids will be replaced with the nationally recognised yellow lids and the current green or yellow bin lids will be swapped for general waste use with red lids.

The shire has hired contractors to replace the bin lids in the Denmark, Nornalup and Peaceful Bay areas throughout March and April.

The national standards for bin lid colours aims to make it easier for people to know which bins to put waste in no matter where they live in Australia.

The new lids will display an information sticker with details about what waste to put in each bin and the old bins will be recycled.

Shire waste officer Eva Overton said she hoped the stickers would help the community make the right choices.

“We’re hoping to make it easier for our community to really get to know their bins,” she said.

“We know the Denmark, Nornalup and Peaceful Bay community is really proud of our pristine environment and we all want to do our bit to reduce our impact on the planet.

‘So I hope this changeover will help us all.”

The program aims to reduce recycling bin contamination, caused by confusion about which items can be recycled, to help reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.

The shire’s waste officer will be at information stalls at the Kwoorabup Community Markets at the Golden Hill Steiner School on January 30 and February 6.

The shire will send letters to Denmark residents informing them of the logistics of the bin lids changeover.
