Former AFL star Brett Peake one of the special guests to head down the slide at Big Freeze event in Boxwood

Former AFL star Brett Peake has been confirmed as one of the special guests who will take the plunge at the Big Freeze in Boxwood Hill on Saturday.

The annual Big Freeze event, hosted by the Boxwood Hill and Lake Grace-Pingrup football clubs, has raised more than $200,000 in the past four years.

Organisers have set a goal of $50,000 for this year to fight motor neurone disease, a condition which has taken a terrible toll on their communities.

After playing 118 AFL games for Fremantle and St Kilda, Peake is now living in Albany where he pulls on a Sharks jumper in the Great Southern Football League.

The 38-year-old said Neale Daniher’s amazing work with the annual MND Big Freeze in Melbourne had inspired him to join the Great Southern fundraiser.

He plans to go down the icy slide dressed as a can of Emu Export.

“Since Neale has been diagnosed the work he has done for MND is incredible and when you are in the footy fraternity you just do anything you can to help out,” Peake said.

“I’ve heard some good things about this fundraising effort and the least I can do is go down and raise an extra dollar or two.

“I know a lot of people in Boxwood have been affected by MND.

“I’ve got one of my old jumpers that Dad and I will sign for the club to auction off as well.”

AFL premiership player Mitch Morton is another big name set to take the plunge for charity.

Morton is playing with Lake Grace-Pingrup in the Ongerup Football Association this season.

Others set to go down the slide include Caroline House, Arlene Irving, Jeremy Nelson, Emma Dawn, Kevin Augustynek, Tyson Prater and Casey Pinney.

MND has rattled both of the those communities, most recently with the loss of beloved Great Southern woman Penny Moir to the disease this year.

The Big Freeze will take place at Boxwood Hill Football Club on Saturday, where there will be live music, dinner and an auction.
