Colts and 16s teams will come together as part of Saturday’s Great Southern Football League headspace Super Round, the competition a precursor to the season proper.

The round robin carnival is sponsored by headspace Albany and will not be played for premiership points. Rather, it will be a useful pre-season hit-out for players ahead of next week’s opening round of the GSFL season and, more importantly, a way to raise awareness of mental health among young men.

Royals, Railways, North Albany, Albany, Denmark-Walpole and Mt Barker will all take part in the event at the Centennial Stadium precinct. The carnival will have three rounds, with each game consisting of two 15-minute halves with no time on.

Football jumpers from headspace will be given out to deserving players from each team, while every footballer will wear specially made green headspace socks.

The umpires will sport headspace shirts.

All 16s fixtures will be played at the same time in each round, followed by the colts.

GSFL director Brett Turpin said it was shaping up to be a good event.

“I can’t wait to see all the 16s and colts get out there and have a run around before the season,” he said.

“Coaches might struggle with numbers due to school holidays but if there is 13-14, we will make a game happen.

“We had a lot of feedback last year as to why there was no 16s, obviously it was our first year so we have ticked all the boxes and got them involved.

“Andrew Wenzel has been fantastic and wants to use as a template for other activities and it’s great we can try get the mental health message across to kids at a young age.”

The GSFL has requested that each club supplies one umpire.
