Albany star Red Can Man will start his path towards his major goal the $1 million Group 1 Railway Stakes in November, when he returns in a hotly contested $100,000 Black Heart Bart Stakes(1200m) at Belmont Park on Saturday.

The listed feature race, previously called Birthday Stakes, will be renamed in honour of champion WA galloper Black Heart Bart, who is now enjoying retirement on a cattle farm in Redmond near Albany.

Red Can Man will be in search of his fifth straight victory and Albany trainer Steve Wolfe is bullish about his chances of running a good race.

“He is a very good horse and all things being equal on Saturday he will go close to winning,” Wolfe said.

“There’s three or four really good horses in the field this weekend and I think Floyd is the one to beat which may surprise a few people.

“We will be up there and he’s going to be among them at the finish.

“The Railway is his grand final and this is where we start getting him ready.”

Wolfe’s stable jockey Shaun McGruddy came to Albany on Tuesday and worked the Gingerbread Man gelding, with the pair carrying 57.5kg and jumping from barrier 11.

“Quite often Shooter or Hally (Peter Hall) come down and do some track work for me, it’s more just about getting feedback on how the horses are going,” Wolfe said.

Red Can Man will face the likes of Vital Silver, Free Trade, Massimo and Cup Night in the deep field on Saturday.

Black Heart Bart, a winner of 17 races from 62 and an incredible $4.8 million in prize money, will lead the field into the mounting yard on Saturday.

On Saturday it will be exactly a year since the the WA champion’s famous Group one Underwood Stakes victory at $101 odds at Caulfield.
