Reds Volleyball Club face UWA Volleyball Club in inaugural Western Australia Volleyball League regional round

Albany will get a taste of WA’s elite volleyball talent when Reds Volleyball Club take on UWA Volleyball Club on Saturday night. Reds’ men’s and women’s State sides will lock horns with UWA as part of the WA Volleyball League’s inaugural regional round at Albany Leisure and Aquatic Centre. Local products Ryan Slater, who was recently picked for the Australian men’s volleyball team, and Rielly Vincent will make the journey to Albany to play for Reds in front of their home fans. Reds president Anthony Meo said the regional round is part of a club initiative aimed at growing the sport in regional parts of the State. “It’s been driven by Reds in collaboration with Volleyball WA, Albany Volleyball Association, Denmark Volleyball Club and UWA,” he said. “There’s been a lot of strong synergies and close collaboration with a lot of Great Southern-based players. “Slater is one of those, Reilly Vincent is an Albany product as well and our director of volleyball, Max Wason, has been the person in charge of putting this region round together for us. “It is really exciting times and the first time that this has been done in the WAVL competition.” Meo said his club was looking forward to showcasing the sport in Albany and creating an electric environment for spectators. “We’re hoping to create an amazing experience for everyone down in the Great Southern — players, coaches, spectators, people who’ve been engaged with volleyball and people who maybe have not had as much exposure to the game previously,” he said. “We’re really trying to create an awesome buzz about the WAVL competition and our sport for the region to help the local clubs continue to grow the game. “It should also be an amazing opportunity for our players to be able to travel and play in a different environment in a regional town.” The Great Southern has produced brilliant volleyball talent, including Slater and Australian Volleyball Academy member Tully Bew, and Meo said it is vitally important to continue developing the burgeoning talent within the region. “I think it’s incredibly important . . . from our perspective there’s been some really strong pathways that we’re hoping to create for regional talent to be able to compete in, but beyond that, creating broader opportunities,” Meo said. “It’s just an incredible amount of opportunity that we’re hoping to foster for regional talent and create opportunities for these athletes to compete in a number of different competitions, both regionally and in Perth. “There are some incredible opportunities that we’re hoping to create as part of this regional round and hopefully, we can provide plenty more chances for the players down there in the Great Southern to be able to pursue their volleyball dreams.” The men’s first serve will be at 6.30pm before the women’s game at 8pm with tickets available for purchase online for $5. The clubs and Volleyball WA will conduct coaching clinics throughout the weekend as part of the Great Southern Volley Mania, with junior and senior development sessions along with hitting, passing and defence-focused clinics. Players wishing to participate in the various sessions thought the weekend are encouraged to register online.
