Southern Smash 2024: MM Electrical Mavericks win under-21 title over Cricket Great Southern Allstars

MM Electrical Mavericks recovered from an early stumble to win the Southern Smash under-21 series over Cricket Great Southern Allstars, as part of another successful Albany marquee T20 tournament. The Mavericks won the final two matches of the three-game series to clinch the title with some of the best young talent the State has to offer going toe-to-toe throughout the Smash competition on December 28-30. A convincing win in the third and deciding match meant the Mavericks were crowned under-21 champions. They chased 100 runs for a near-faultless eight-wicket victory at Turf East. Max Osborne led the charge with 33 not out and 2-8 in the final and was named player of the tournament after finishing with 40 runs and seven wickets. After winning the toss and bowling, The Mavericks took frequent wickets which put immense pressure on the new batsman as their bowling attack ripped through the Allstars batting line-up. Buddy Robinson partnered Osborne well with 2-15 while Lachlan Tindale provided a resilient 23 from 18 deliveries. Allstars opening batters Ryley Valli (16) and Mohit Jaggi (17) got starts before losing their wicket. In pursuit, Osborne’s 33 was helped by Devon Jefferis who scored a rapid 34 from 21 while Lochlan Otway scored a patient 23 from 26 balls. The Mavericks forced a decider after defeating the Allstars in game two on Sunday morning with a 15-run victory at Turf South. After winning the toss and batting, the Mavericks posted 126 before being rolled in the 19th over. Robinson scored a quickfire 34 from 24 balls while Devon Oelofse contributed an important 16. Oliver Douglas snared 3-5 from three overs for the Allstars and Alby Kowald chipped in with 3-18 from three overs. In reply, the Mavericks bowled smartly to restrict the Allstars’ scoring flow before bowling them out for 111 on the second last ball of the innings. Allstars captain Ryley Valli scored 35 at the top of the order and Mohit Jaggi added a crucial 28. Osborne took 3-19 from four overs to lead his side’s bowling attack, while Robinson (2-12) and O’Shea Durack (2-19) played key roles. The Allstars secured a brilliant win in the opening fixture on Saturday after brilliantly defending 7-178 despite a courageous unbeaten 93 from Mavericks all-rounder Durack. Durack carried the bat for 93 from 63 balls, belting seven fours and three sixes but the Mavericks finished 6-177 and fell two runs shy. Billy O’Meara added 26 runs alongside Durack while Archie Atwell snared 2-33 for the Allstars. Robert Turner spearheaded the Allstars’ batting innings with a cavalier 78 from 38 balls including three fours and eight sixes. Keagan Lynch was busy with 30 from 29 and Valli added 23 from 15. The Mavericks were best served in the field by Jefferis (2-27) and Osborne (2-16).
