Thompson the star of the show as Great Southern women combine to triumph in inaugural country week tournament

Great Southern’s top women’s soccer players combined to triumph in the inaugural senior country week tournament in Perth. Coach Cassie Paxman oversaw the 2-1 grand final win over Leeuwin-Naturaliste at the Sam Kerr Stadium on Sunday. As well as the team trophy, Albany Caledonians’ Shelley Thompson was named player of the match in the grand final and player of the tournament, while Rovers’ Georgia Whitelaw picked up the best referee accolade. Paxman, who coaches Rovers in the Great Southern Soccer Association competition, said her side was drawn from six GSSA clubs and had showed great heart in battling to victory after going behind in the final. “I am so incredibly proud of the team,” she said. “To represent the region is a great privilege and fighting back from one goal down took a lot of composure, smart football and pure grit.” Great Southern trailed in the showpiece when Leeuwin-Naturaliste capitalised on a scrappy clearance early in the second half, but while midfield powerhouse Milla Trichilo controlled the centre of the pitch, the tide turned courtesy of two moments of brilliance from Stephanie Grant. First, she delivered a long, curling pass to her clubmate Thompson who levelled the score with a neat finish. Then she sent a perfect through ball which Thompson converted in style just seven minutes from time to clinch victory. Great Southern started their campaign with a 3-1 win over their grand final rivals. Kayla Stoney got the ball rolling early and then an own goal and Trichilo completed their tally. Next were Geraldton, with Great Southern winning 4-2, coming back from two goals down with only 13 minutes on the clock. Trichilo, Thompson – with two – and Grant had turned the tables before half-time. Trichilo and Rhiannon Cross were on target in a 2-0 win over the regional representative team while Goldfields were dispatched 4-0 in the semifinal to set up the decider. The Great Southern men were 2-1 winners over Karratha and defeated Hedland 8-0, but went down 2-1 to Goldfields and 1-0 to Leeuwin to miss out on a finals’ berth, coming fifth overall. Geraldton won the final 1-0 against Leeuwin-Naturaliste. GSSA president Jamie Steele said the regional associations in WA had been working hard to get the senior country week tournament off the ground. “It’s only going to grow from here,” he said. “This result is a significant achievement for regional football and a proud moment for the Great Southern. “The tournament was about community, connection and showcasing the talent and spirit of regional WA.” He thanked the contribution of volunteers, officials and support staff.
