Mountain bike riders from around WA will converge at the “Poikies” track in Kalgan for the running of the third round of the WA Downhill Series this weekend.

Albany Mountain Bike Club held its first official event at the Poikies track, situated off Poikeclerup Road, last year and attracted 75 competitors.

The WA Downhill Series was delayed this year because of COVID-19 but event organisers are hoping more than 50 riders will take part in the event on Saturday and Sunday.

Practice will be held on Saturday and racing will run from 11am-3pm on Sunday across a range of different categories.

A host of local Albany and Denmark riders will be out to mix it with the best from around the State on the tough trail conditions at Poikies.

AMBC president Dora Adeline said there was plenty of interest in this weekend’s State round.

“The rough-and-ready features and terrain will provide riders and spectators with an exciting weekend of downhill racing to froth over,” Adeline said. “We have riders coming from all over the place and the club is very excited to be back at Poikies.

“The first official event there and it was a State round as well in 2019 was very well received and I think everyone is pretty keen to come back.”

In round 2 of the series held at Yarloop, Albany’s Declan Poett won the under-15 division and Ben Halsall narrowly missed out on claiming the elite category.

Meanwhile, several Great Southern riders performed well in the recent round of the WA Gravity Enduro Series held at Evedon Park.

Round five of the series was held on September 13 and Albany’s Dinah Roecker won the women’s 45+ super masters division and Corinne Stoner was third. Corben Weinert

won his under-19 men class.

Jess Waldron was second in the under-19 women’s category. Hamish Wilkes took third in the under-17 men’s class.
