Police hold grave concerns for the welfare of keen local fisherman Terry Jennings after a full-scale sea search began on Monday for the man — who had not been seen by friends or family since Thursday.

Mr Jennings, 73, was last seen parking his car and trailer at the Gnarabup boat ramp carpark on Thursday.

Police believe he then went out to sea in a 3m dinghy, which they say was not suitable for harsh weather conditions.

The well-known, fit and active community member was last seen speaking to another resident near White Elephant Cafe and police asked anyone with information to come forward.

Police said they had grave concerns for Mr Jennings’ welfare because the weather was unfavourable during the past few days and the amount of time his car and trailer have been left in the carpark was concerning.

An air and sea search started on Monday morning after weather precluded the search on Sunday night.

Inspector Scott Morrissey said police aircraft and watercraft were supported by the Augusta and Margaret River Volunteer Marine Rescue Services in the search.

Insp. Morrissey said police held grave fears about Mr Jennings’ welfare.

“It is dire, the missing person has not been seen since Thursday morning, so it’s four days,” he said.

“We were behind the ‘eight ball’ before we started so we have thrown a lot of resources and assets at this to try and resolve this as quickly as we can but obviously that’s very challenging.”

Premier Mark McGowan said it was a distressing time for his family and hoped the man would be found safe and well.

The parked boat trailer was reported to police on Sunday night.

Police sought to speak to a man who was seen talking with Mr Jennings at about 8.15am on Thursday.

It is believed he may have information that can assist the search.

Anyone with information is asked to call Margaret River Police on 9757 8600 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
