An investigation has been launched after a body was found in a mine on Thursday.

South Australia Police were contacted around 9.30am on September 10 after the discovery was made.

The body of the man, whose age and identity have not been revealed, was found at an open cut mine near Coober Pedy, around 850 kilometres north of Adelaide.

His cause of death has not been determined and police are investigating the circumstances which lead to his death.

Police are receiving assistance from Major Crime detectives and Forensic Response officers.

A report is being prepared for the coroner and a post-mortem examination will be conducted on Friday.
