The Royal Flying Doctor Service has declared its largest regional base will put alternative service arrangements in place after a fire caused extensive damage to its main building.

The fire, which started at 8pm on January 2, caused damage to areas of the base’s main building used for treating patients, administration and storage of equipment and medical supplies.

The adjacent hangar and aircraft did not receive any damage in the blaze and no staff or patients were at the base at the time for the fire.

The cause of the blaze is not yet known, but police say it is not suspicious.

RFDS chief executive for WA Rebecca Tomkinson said the safety of staff and patients is top priority as they assess the damage.
