Disability fishing program Fishability begins Bunbury service after success of Busselton program

Following huge demand at its Busselton program, Fishability is expanding to include a Bunbury service aimed at helping those with a disability enjoy fishing. The program held its first session on Monday, and it will take place about once a week through to mid-December. The sessions will involve fishing from a jetty, allowing children and adults to enjoy the outdoor activity. Previously, sessions in Busselton have attracted crowds of up to 50 people, including participants from Bunbury. Experienced fishing instructor Michelle Lee will lead the program, supported by partner Mark Everett. Ms Lee was instrumental in establishing the Busselton Fishability program in 2015, and Mr Everett is a former businessman and experienced fisher. “Basically, anyone can fish,” Ms Lee said. “It’s good for mental health. We do have a lot of people that come that just need that break and just need to get out and be with people when doing an activity.” The Bunbury program will be bolstered by a new vehicle, purpose-built trailer and fishing gear provided through support from Lotterywest, Fishability and the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development. Sessions will be hosted at the Sykes Foreshore Reserve in the Leschenault Inlet. Fishability executive officer Michael McMullan said the benefits for the community would be immense. “Children and adults living with disabilities in Bunbury will now have the same opportunity to go fishing as do residents in Albany, Busselton, Mandurah, Waroona and Geraldton and Perth,” he said. “With emphasis on participation and ability rather than disability, the Bunbury Fishability team will ensure everybody has the opportunity to experience fishing with support from volunteers, family and friends. “With the modified equipment Fishability can offer our participants, it means that every person can enjoy the benefits of fishing, regardless of age, ability or experience.” Anyone wanting to participate, volunteer or donate to the program can do so through www.fishability.org.au.
