Four young people from the South West embarked on a high seas sailing adventure last week thanks to the Dardanup Shire Council.

The Leeuwin Youth Explorer is a week-long voyage for 14 to 25-year-olds which involves participation in all aspects of a ship’s operations, including navigating a course, setting sails and sharing in night-watch duties.

Shire of Dardanup Leeuwin Ocean Adventure scholarships were awarded to Jake Allpike, of Wellington Mill; Lochlan Kent, of Millbridge; Gymea Meek, of Dardanup, and Hudson White, of Burekup.

Lochlan said he was looking forward to the sailing adventure.

I can’t wait to get going and to get home and tell everyone about it when I get back.

Lochlan said he applied for the scholarship for the Leeuwin experience because of encouragement from his family and friends.

“I wanted to do this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” he said.

Dardanup shire councillor Janice Dow said the voyage was designed to help young people build important life skills such as self-confidence, communication, teamwork and leadership.

“The Youth Explorer Voyage on board the STS Leeuwin II is a program that has been endorsed by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority,” Cr Dow said.

The one comment we receive every year from all of our scholars on returning from their voyage is that the experience was an opportunity of a lifetime and they felt extremely fortunate to have been able to participate.

Cr Dow also thanked scholarship sponsors Eaton and the Dardanup Lions clubs whose support allowed four people from the South West to receive the opportunity to go on the voyage.

The ship will returned to Fremantle today.
