The lifting of regional border restrictions between the Perth-Peel, South West, Great Southern and the Wheatbelt last week has allowed an influx of tourists to hit the road to explore.

Perth couple Kai Isselbacher and Amy Stead jumped at the opportunity to travel and spent last week exploring the South West.

The pair had planned to spend their year travelling around the world, with a trip to Hawaii, Europe and Africa in the calendar. However, this dream was short lived once travel restrictions came into place.

Mr Isselbacher said he was disappointed when their back-up plan of driving around Australia in a caravan was also put on the back burner, but said he was excited to be travelling outside of Perth again.

As soon as they opened the borders we rushed out and it’s been great — we’ve loved it.

Mr Isselbacher said people underestimated how beautiful the region was.

“It’s also important to support local as well while you can because people have been doing it tough,” Ms Stead said.

Leschenault Caravan Park manager Tom Voysey said he was pleased to have more tourists visiting again and was looking forward to things getting busier.

“We’re already booked out for the long weekend coming up,” Mr Voysey said.
