Residents in parts of West River have been told to leave immediately as a dangerous bushfire burns out of control, with authorities warning that lives and homes are under imminent threat.

An emergency warning has been issued by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services for the area bounded by South Coast Highway, Koornong Road, Mallee Road and West River Road in the Shire of Ravensthorpe.

People in the danger zone are being urged to “act immediately to survive”.

“You are in danger and need to act immediately to survive,” DFES said, warning that conditions could change without notice.

Those who can safely get out are being told to leave now towards Esperance and not to wait until the fire hits.

“Do not wait and see — leaving at the last minute could put your life in danger,” the alert said.

Homeowners who cannot leave safely have been told to prepare to shelter in a room with running water.

Authorities stressed that anyone already away from their property must not return, saying conditions are far too hazardous.
